How to Get Perfect Skin by Adding Activated Charcoal to Your Skincare Routine

I’ve been hearing a lot about activated charcoal for a while now, although I confess that I’ve only recently decided to try it out for myself.

I was a bit skeptical since it seems there’s always some new hot ingredient that promises perfect skin but after two of my friends credited their clear, smooth looking skin to the ingredient, I finally caved and decided to give it a try.

And let me tell you, I was NOT dissappointed.

But before I talk about my experience and results from incorporating it into my skincare routine, lets talk about what activated charcoal is and what its benefits are.

What is activated charcoal?

In a nutshell, activated charcoal is regular charcoal that has been heated in a way that it develops small “pores” that are able to trap toxins and chemicals.

It’s usually produced by heating coconut shells to high temperatures to form charcoal. In order to then “activate” this charcoal, the internal surfaces are eroded using hot air/steam to increase its absorptive surface area. This absorpative area is what draws out toxins and impurities from deep within the skin.

A little goes a long way though! Don’t use too much as the strength of activated charcoal can irritate the skin if overused.

Option 2: Make a DIY activated charcoal mask at home

What you’ll need:

  • Activated charcoal capsules (I like this brand, available on Amazon)
  • 1/2 tsp of apple cider vinegar
  • A drop of oil of your choice (eg. Vitamin E, lemon oil, coconut oil)

Mix the ingredients together, apply to the face, and wash it off after it’s dried up. Apply moisturizer after.
