How to Get Perfect Skin by Adding Activated Charcoal to Your Skincare Routine
I’ve been hearing a lot about activated charcoal for a while now, although I confess that I’ve only recently decided to try it out for myself.
I was a bit skeptical since it seems there’s always some new hot ingredient that promises perfect skin but after two of my friends credited their clear, smooth looking skin to the ingredient, I finally caved and decided to give it a try.
And let me tell you, I was NOT dissappointed.
But before I talk about my experience and results from incorporating it into my skincare routine, lets talk about what activated charcoal is and what its benefits are.
What is activated charcoal?
In a nutshell, activated charcoal is regular charcoal that has been heated in a way that it develops small “pores” that are able to trap toxins and chemicals.
It’s usually produced by heating coconut shells to high temperatures to form charcoal. In order to then “activate” this charcoal, the internal surfaces are eroded using hot air/steam to increase its absorptive surface area. This absorpative area is what draws out toxins and impurities from deep within the skin.
A little goes a long way though! Don’t use too much as the strength of activated charcoal can irritate the skin if overused.
Benefits of activated charcoal for skin
1. Pores appear smaller and cleaner
When your pores look clogged and dirty, your complexion will never look smooth and clear no matter how nice the rest of your skin is. Activated charcoal binds to the gunk in your pores and helps pull it out, making your pores look smaller, cleaner, and better overall.
2. Detoxifies skin
While other deep-cleaners are full of nasty chemicals, activated charcoal is a natural yet powerful way to give your skin the deep clean it needs after exposure to the many toxins in the environment. Deep cleaning once a week should be sufficient for most people.
3. It helps fight acne & acne scars
While there are many different causes for acne, activated charcoal may help the skin clear up. Due to its slightly gritty texture, it gently exfoliates the skin which improves the appearance of existing acne scars by sloughing away the skin on top. It also helps absorb excess oils and toxins from beneath the skin which helps prevent future blemishes.
4. Balances oily skin
As mentioned earlier, activated charcoal helps to absorb excess oils and even pull out old sebum from pores. Use once or twice per week if you have oily skin and you should find that your skin feels more balanced.
5. Removes blackheads
Activated charcoal helps to naturally remove and prevent blackheads through it’s ability to clean out pores.

Option 2: Make a DIY activated charcoal mask at home
What you’ll need:
- Activated charcoal capsules (I like this brand, available on Amazon)
- 1/2 tsp of apple cider vinegar
- A drop of oil of your choice (eg. Vitamin E, lemon oil, coconut oil)
Mix the ingredients together, apply to the face, and wash it off after it’s dried up. Apply moisturizer after.

That’s all for now! I personally loved the way this left my pores looking (my big pores have been the bane of my existence for as long as I can remember now) but if you try this out, let me know how it works out for you! 🙂
